Big-web companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon have changed consumer expectations. We want everything delivered to us in real-time – and when this need isn’t met, we do business other places. At Chef we call this the “Delight Economy” and traditional enterprises are challenged to keep up. Not only do they need to learn how to operate as big-web companies do, spinning up new applications quickly, pushing out updates in real-time and migrating workloads to the cloud, they must also consider their inventory differently. Today, code is precious inventory for any business and arguably decays quicker than hard inventory given changing consumer demands and competitive pressures. This means companies must re-architect their infrastructure, applying key learnings from true web-scale businesses including the necessity to automate, in order to build quality code, get it to market quickly and cash in on the inventory.
